Biography
Originally from Bari in Italy, Angelo has acquired a strong interest for the sea and the marine diversity since his early years. In 2007, after obtaining his bachelor in biological science at the University of Bologna (Italy), he went to the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona (Italy) to begin his master studies in marine biology. After his graduation he finally had the opportunity to spend some time in the field. He traveled to Ecuador for the study of gorgonians and black coral assemblages and, aiming to learn more about deep-sea corals, he took part to several research cruises in the Mediterranean Sea. For his Ph.D in geobiology, he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (Germany). During his doctoral studies he focused on the diversity, speciation and evolution of shallow water octocorals. After completing his Ph.D in 2016, he went to the University of Copenhagen as short-term research visitor, to work on museum material exploiting the aDNA sequencing facilities available at the Centre for GeoGenetics in the Natural History Museum of Copenhagen. From 2018 to 2020 Angelo joined, as postdoctoral fellow, the Molecular Invertebrate Systematics and Ecology laboratory at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa (Japan), working on population genomics and the mitochondrial genome of diverse anthozoan groups. From 2024 he works as postdoctoral fellow at the Red Sea Research Center of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. His research in the Red Sea will be mainly based on the study of non-indigenous species (NIS) using bulk DNA and eDNA samples with a metabarcoding approach.
